LRA Certificates Journalists In Tax Reporting

The Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) has successfully concluded its first-ever tax reporting workshop for journalists in the western region, certificating more than 20 journalists after two days of intensive training.

The workshop marks a historic milestone in the LRA’s effort to deepen public awareness, improve tax reporting, and strengthen its partnership with the media.

Held in collaboration with the Western Region Journalists Association (WReJA), the training brought together journalists from Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, and Gbarpolu Counties under the theme: “Enhancing Tax Awareness and Public Engagement.”

Participants were awarded certificates as a symbol of recognition for their newly acquired knowledge in tax reporting. The workshop covered a broad range of topics, including: understanding domestic and customs taxes, the role and core functions of the LRA, fostering community trust and credibility in journalism and enhancing tax communication through media partnerships among others.

In his closing remarks, Danicius Kaihenneh Sengbeh, Manager of Communications, Media, and Public Affairs at the LRA, described the event as historic and impactful, highlighting it as the Authority’s first officially executed media training since its establishment in 2013.

“Over the past two days, we have seen your energy, curiosity, and strong commitment to using your platforms to educate the public on tax matters,” Sengbeh noted. “You are no longer just reporters. You are now Tax Ambassadors for your counties.”

He stressed that the media plays a crucial role in shaping national dialogue, building public trust, and promoting voluntary tax compliance. Sengbeh encouraged participants to continue amplifying tax-related messages and to support the LRA’s goal of boosting domestic resource mobilization.

“This is just the beginning,” he added. “You now carry the voice of the LRA in your respective counties, and we look forward to continued collaboration in promoting tax culture across Liberia.”

Representing WReJA, Jannie Kamokia, Treasurer of the Association and Manager of Radio Cape Mount, thanked the LRA for empowering local journalists and pledged WReJA’s commitment to promoting tax awareness through community radio stations.

“We are going to use our platforms to spread the message about tax payment and its importance to national development,” Kamokia stated.

Foday Sesay of Puma FM, speaking on behalf of the participants, expressed appreciation to the LRA and called for sustained engagement with the media.

“We are very grateful for this training and hope it won’t be the last. We are ready to use our voices and platforms to promote tax compliance,” he assured.

The workshop represents a significant step in the LRA’s 2025 Media Engagement Strategy, which prioritizes media capacity-building as a core pillar of public engagement and transparency.
